A student mosque in the 2200 block of 15th Street was vandalized this week according to CAIR or the Center for American Islamic Relations.

A GoFundMe page was set up with the goal of raising $500 to replace a glass front door which had been smashed.

CAIR said, “An official with the Islamic Center of South Plains in Lubbock, Texas, reports that worshipers at a mosque associated with the center discovered outside lights broken and the mosque’s main glass door smashed when they arrived for early morning (fajr) prayers.”

“Nothing was stolen from the facility,” CAIR said.

“Because of the recent spike in attacks on American Muslims and their religious institutions, and because nothing was stolen from the mosque, we urge law enforcement authorities to investigate a possible bias motive for this crime,” said CAIR-Houston Executive Director Mustafaa Carroll.

“There is ignorance in our Texas Tech community,” the GoFundMe page said. “Let's come together and show the world what being a Red Raider really means: diversity, acceptance, and unity.”

A police report referred to it as criminal mischief and said the door was smashed some time late Monday night or early Tuesday morning.
