Police in Burlington are seeking two men suspected of spray painting “USA” on a local mosque and throwing eggs at the building early Sunday, an incident that investigators and Islamic leaders say they believe was a hate crime.

A member of the Islamic Center of Burlington reported the vandalism around 1:45 a.m. Sunday, Burlington police said. Investigators noticed the message in red spray paint, along with the remains of smashed eggs.It was the latest in a series of incidents at the mosque, which was also hit by “USA” graffiti in 2013. No arrests were made in the 2013 case.

Earlier this year, a young man took off his shirt, wore it like a head scarf, and taunted people exiting the mosque, according to Dr. John Robbins, executive director of the Massachusetts chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. That incident took place during the holy month of Ramadan, he said.
