Plovdiv. District Court of Bulgaria’s second-biggest city of Plovdiv sentenced Viktor Alexandrov, who tried to set the Dzhumaya Dzhamiya mosque in the city on fire, to one-year imprisonment.

The court heard the trial on an accelerated procedure after the defendant confessed his guilt. Speaking before the court Alexandrov said he was drunk and did not remember his acts but added that he was sorry for it.
In the night of January 5 Alexandrov poured nearly 3 litres of gasoline on the window framing of the building and set it on fire. The fire was put down on time by the security guard on duty, while the perpetrator was later on arrested at a filling station after stealing more fuel to repeat his arson attempt.
Dzhumaya Dzhamiya is a building worth BGN 1,248,800, owned by the Muslim Board of Trustees-Plovdiv. It has a historical and artistic value.
